DESCRIPTION

Oxytetracycline is a broad spectrum antibiotic that at normal doses shows bacteriostatic activity against many Gram-positive bacteria (e.g. Streptococcus spp., Diplococcus, Staphylococcus spp., Bacillus anthracis, Clostridium spp., Listeria monocytogenes, Erysipelothrix spp., Mycobacterium spp., Corynebacterium spp.), Gram-negative bacteria (e.g Pasturella spp., Klebsiella spp., Gram-negative anaerobes such as: Fusobacterium spp., Bacteroides spp.), against spirochetes (e.g. Vibrio spp., Leptospiren spp.), rickettsia, mycoplasma, chlamydia (Psittacose group) and some protozoa.

Most important is plasmid mediated resistance. There is complete cross-resistance with other antibiotics of the tetracycline group.

Oxytetracycline is active against most important porcine and bovine respiratory pathogens. It is also active against the following pathogenic microorganism from poultry: Mycoplasma synoviae, M. gallisepticum, M. meleagridis, Hemophilus gallinarum, Pasteurella multocida.

At the dosages recommended, the antimicrobial activity of oxytetracycline is principally bacteriostatic.

INDICATIONS

For prophylaxis, metaphylaxis and treatment of infections caused by oxytetracycline susceptible micro-organisms.

CONTRA-INDICATIONS

Administration to animals with a previous history of hypersensitivity towards tetracyclines.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

For oral administration in the drinking water.

Pigs:20-50 mg oxytetracycline/ kg b.w. or 25 to 62.5 mg powder/ kg b.w./ day. Treatment should be continued for 4 to max. 6 days. To be given preferably with the drinking water.

Calves:20 mg oxytetracycline/ kg b.w. or 25 mg powder/ kg b.w. every 12 hours for 3-5 days. Mix with the milk or milk replacer.

Poultry:50-100 mg oxytetracycline/ kg b.w./ day or 62.5 to 125 mg powder/ kg b.w. for 3 to 7 days. Mix with the drinking water.

In case of drinking water medication, it is advised to calculate the total amount of OTC 80 that is necessary for treatment for the whole group in one day.

The following formula can be used:

Practically, this posology corresponds with the following inclusion rates in drinking water:

UNDESIRABLE EFFECTS

Gastrointestinal disturbances may occur at recommended dosages with super infections of yeasts and non-susceptible bacteria.

SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS AND WARNINGS

In farms where tetracycline antibiotics are regularly used, it is advised to control first the susceptibility of pathogens by means of an antibiogram.

Drinking water facilities (tanks, conduit pipes, nipples, etc.) should be cleaned properly after cessation of medication. Facilities completely separate from the normal drinking water provisions are advised.

Oxytetracycline should only be used in pregnant animals when it is therapeutically justified.

Chelation with bi- and trivalent cations may inhibit the antimicrobial action and gastro-intestinal absorption of oxytetracycline. Moreover, insoluble complexes may be formed (eg. with Calcium carbonate). Simultaneous use with bactericidal actino antibiotics (eg. penicillins. cephalosporins, trimethoprim) is not advised (possible antagonism). Treatment in case of hypersensitivity reactions: corticosteroids, antihistaminics.

Oxytetracycline seldom may cause contact dermatitis. Therefore, direct contact with the drug should be avoided.
